Studytrip 2011 - Berlin City Hospitality
April 6, 2011: a small review of the study trip to Berlin, Germany in March 2011.The study trip abroad is a fixed part of the Master Program.
In relation to a research project on City Hospitality of The Hague, the students visited Berlin, which is well-known for their hospitality.
The students will present their deliverables in a premium publication during a Symposium
“City Hospitality”, organized by the City The Hague in cooperation with the Master of Science in Hospitality Management program of RSM Erasmus University & Hotelschool The Hague on
May 25.
In Berlin the students had the opportunity – as a visitor – to find out how to assess city hospitality by identifying best and worst practices they could use as input for the project.
March 8 We made a sightseeing tour to see some parts of Berlin and experienced o.a. the distinction between The Hague’s and Berlin’s architecture. We visited one of most hidden treasures in Berlin: Kulturbrauerei, an old brewery that has been reconstructed into an event and celebration centre. The brewery successfully combines historical and innovative aspects.
March 9 Visit to the ITB where more than 120 nations represented themselves to the public. It was a good opportunity to contact key persons of the hotel chains, to attend workshops, seminars and guest lectures. At the end of the day we visited the Potzdammer Plats, Panorama Punkt, one of the highest points in Berlin providing an overview on the entire city and where a photo-exhibition of the re-construction of Berlin was presented.
March 10 Students visited a couple of out of 153 musea, like the German Historical Museum, DDR-museum, the Jewish Memorial Museum, Branderburger Tor and the Reichstag, with an overview of the fall of the Wall in 1989. Furthermore a visit to Hilton Hotel, one of the nicest hotels in Berlin in terms of buss and grandeur where an alumni evening took place, organized by Mr. W. Dooge. President of the Board of Directors of Hotelschool The Hague. Late in the evening we enjoyed the farewell diner in an Italian restaurant.
March 11 In the morning we were welcomed by the General Manager of NH Hotels Berlin who provided us with a clear understanding of the present state of affairs of the tourism sector in Berlin.
In the afternoon we went to Tegel Airport to return back home.
